5 top exams tips from an Examiner (and Consultant)…Useful for IGCSE (Oct./Nov. Students) & Others

Hello Again and welcome back to my blog...

The School year has started in earnest and various exams are around the corner. Be it Standardised exams like IELTS, TOEFL, SAT etc. or the upcoming GCSE/IGCSE exams. Whichever one it is, Preparation is key!

To make the most of it and achieve super success, here are some 5 non-exhaustive tips to get your child/ward making those super grades...

Be well prepared…

Get the following exam preparation materials: Past papers, Mark schemes, Examiner reports, Revision Checklist, Worksheets, Websites, Software etc. to achieve super grades. Above all, learn skills that would make for outstanding success – Read ‘Super Study Skills for Super-Achieving Students’. Some skills to learn include ‘The memory dump technique', 'using clear and legible handwriting', 'Easy to Hard Rule' and lots more…

Be well equipped…

The question papers 'assume' that you will have all the equipment listed on the front cover of the examination sheet (if stated). Make sure that you have all the items on this list the day before you go into the examination. Your checklist include - calculators, pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, sharpeners etc. Also make sure you have spares.

Read instructions carefully & follow them…

If the instruction reads ‘Enumerate/Highlight’, that means that you should list or itemize your points; but if it says ‘Discuss’, then you are to expound or give further details.
Also find out the scoring rules for the test or examination and use it to your advantage. If wrong answers are penalised, avoid guess work.
Where you write your answer on the question paper, it is not acceptable to give a choice of answers on the answer line. Examiners will mark the worst answer in these cases.

Show your workings…

You are advised to show workings as well as solutions. Marks are awarded for the workings even when answers may be incorrect. Marks are also given for the work that you do correctly, not subtracted for the work that you get wrong.

Work with allocated time…

The question papers are set so that you have time to finish them and check your answers. If you have 4 questions to be answered in 2 hours, allocate 25 minutes to each question (making a total of 1 hour 40 minutes) and leave at most 20 minutes to revise your answers, proofread your essays paying close attention to grammar, spelling, punctuation and ensuring you answered all the questions with no unanswered questions overleaf.

Finally, please read a testimonial I received some days ago…

“Good day ma, I just finished reading your book of SUPER STUDY SKILLS for SUPER -ACHIEVING STUDENTS, and I was like how I wish have come across this wonderful book during my ND at FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC ILARO. I bet I wouldn't have graduated with a class of PASS. But hope is not yet lost because this book of yours really equip me with a new knowledge of which I will never let go”. From Adeyi (Unedited)
