3 LEGAL WAYS TO STAY BACK IN THE UK AFTER STUDIES
Hello again and welcome back to my blog…
Information they say is power. For some reason, people come
to the UK to study but with a mindset that the UK does not permit them to stay
beyond their studies. While this is somewhat true – especially because you only
have 4 months (now 6 months) to search for a job before the expiration of your
visa, there are also other ways to stay back or extend your stay in the UK.
1.
The TIER
1 graduate entrepreneur visa – As from the 5th of July 2019, this
would be called the ‘Start up’ visa. The TIER 1 graduate entrepreneur visa
scheme is a collaboration between UK Universities and UK Visas and Immigration
(UKVI). The University is entitled to endorse 20 graduates per year that have a
genuine and credible business which would be developed in the UK for a maximum
of two years. Students are endorsed for one year and re-endorsed for the second
year if they can show reasonable progress with the idea without necessarily making
profits. For the ‘Start up visa’, you are endorsed for 2 years at once.
If the plan of any student is to stay back
for a while, it is the onus of the student to check if the University runs the
scheme and sign up for it. The Student enterprise department also guides and helps
to resketch business plans, so do not fret if you think your idea is ‘not
endorsable’. If you want more details on how to prep for TIER 1 Business plan
and your investors pitching, please let me know in the comment section below. See
link for more details on this visa type - https://www.gov.uk/tier-1-graduate-entrepreneur-visa
2.
The TIER
2 work visa – This is the ‘work’ visa which many students focus on but with
very few companies willing to ‘sponsor’ or accept international students.
Throughout the academic session, there are a couple of career fairs being held
on University grounds to expose students to potential employers. There is also
the opportunity to do a placement year or serve as an intern in these companies
that might eventually retain you. As an international student, the aim should
always be to begin this ‘study abroad journey’ with the end in mind. If going
back is not an option, then being ‘super’ proactive is the name of the game.
There is also a list of Tier 2 sponsored companies which can be used while job
hunting. The Big Four companies namely Accenture, PWC, Deloitte and KPMG are
always welcoming of international students provided you have your 1st
Class or 2:1. Non-profit/Charity companies are also keen to sponsor international students
provided you do not mind earning a little lower than most others. More
information can be found here - https://www.gov.uk/tier-2-general
3.
The TIER
4 general student visa – Well yes, the TIER 4 can also be another way of
extending your stay if you do not mind more academic rigor and the costs
involved. With a lot of information, you would realise that some Masters
programmes have scholarships or partial funding available including PhD
programmes. If your aim is to stay, a Master’s Programme for someone who just
completed a BSc. or BA programme would be the option while for someone who just
completed an MSc. or MA programme, an MBA or PhD would be it. As earlier
mentioned, work placements/internships could also be considered midway through
undergraduate programmes which could be advantageous in extending one’s stay
and putting a foot into the work force. More information can be found here - https://www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa
