Studying abroad (Part 2)

Hello...

I’m back again as promised with my studying abroad story.

I’d rewind a little bit to how I stumbled across the Chevening scholarship. I went for a British Council fair way back 2009 and saw some leaflets about it. I gave it a try in 2010 barely 2 weeks to its closing date and submitted a rather horrible application - essays that when I looked back at, even I wouldn’t have given myself the scholarship (lol). Then I stumbled upon this folder saved on my hard drive again in 2016 and thought to give it another try.

Chevening application involves 4 essays with topics in leadership & influence, networking, study plans and career/future plans. For anything ‘FREE’ know that you need to ‘pay’ something for it - be it your time or resources which could be your brainpower and tapping some from others. This time around I was ready to give the essays my best shot, so I started early. I applied online on the Chevening website and selected schools I was interested in. Of course, I considered the rankings of these Universities which is important. Then I started working on my essays.

For a scholarship this competitive, I had to gather all my writing skills and asked around from those who had done it before to have an idea of what was required. (This is highly important as it can save you a lot of stress) I spent days on it and sent it to a friend in the UK for proofing. I even stayed at home and worked solely on it for a full day before prayerfully submitting it.

On the 1st of February 2017, I got an email that my application was successful and I was scheduled for the next phase which was the interview at the British high commission. I cropped a part of it as shown below:

Second email acknowledging my scheduled interview:

Hmmm...See how I prepared again for interview!

I got wind that I did well at the interview as an insider was a friend to my friend (unknown to me) Also, the white man on the panel followed me out and said ‘You’re doing a great job with young girls which is something the UK government is working on’...Whether that was consolation or encouragement, I don’t know but I was encouraged...

Then on the 8th of June, I got an email from Chevening that though I was successful on the interview, I was placed on the ‘Reserve list' that should anyone drop off the selected list, then I would be considered.

Waiting list? Why me? Then I started to cry - trust me, it’s one of my many talents 🤣.

To be continued....
